Martin Dobson has achieved an extraordinary feat of endurance, determination and purpose by successfully completing the infamous Hardmoors 200 race over the scorching May Bank Holiday weekend.
Covering approximately 200 miles across some of North Yorkshire’s toughest terrain, the Hardmoors 200 is regarded as one of the UK’s most demanding ultramarathons. Competitors face not only the immense distance but also strict checkpoint cut-off times throughout the event, with an overall time limit of 60 hours. Martin crossed the finish line in an incredible 55 hours and 13 minutes, safely inside the cut-off and after more than two and a half days of almost continuous running.
The achievement places him among a remarkably small group of athletes. Since the race was first established, this year’s event marked only the fifth edition. Fewer than 150 runners have ever attempted the Hardmoors 200, and only around 50 people have successfully completed it.
While the physical challenge was immense, Martin’s motivation extended far beyond the finish line. Throughout the race, his mission remained clear: to raise funds and awareness for the Nikki Waterhouse Trust, a charity dedicated to supporting young people and families facing difficulties.
The Trust was created in memory of Nicole “Nikki” Waterhouse, who tragically passed away at the age of 32 on 20 October 2013. Nikki worked at Hunters from August 1999 until August 2008, before taking a sabbatical to pursue her love of travel and adventure in Thailand and Australia. She returned to York in May 2009, rejoining the Sales team at Hunters Head Office. The Trust was formed by Nikki’s father John Waterhouse, alongside fellow directors Kevin Hollinrake, Glynis Frew, Ed Jones and Martin Robinson, who wanted to ensure something positive came from such a tragic loss.
Battling fatigue, sleep deprivation, relentless miles and exceptionally hot conditions, Martin drew strength from the knowledge that every step was helping to support the Trust’s vital work. His unwavering focus on that purpose carried him through one of the toughest endurance events in the country.
Friends, family, supporters and fellow runners have praised Martin’s resilience and determination, recognising not only the scale of the sporting achievement but also the difference his fundraising efforts will make.
Completing the Hardmoors 200 is a milestone few runners will ever experience. Completing it in challenging conditions, while representing a charitable cause close to his heart, makes the accomplishment even more special.
Martin’s achievement stands as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when determination meets purpose. Through 200 gruelling miles, countless highs and lows, and 55 hours and 13 minutes of relentless effort, he demonstrated that extraordinary challenges can be overcome when driven by a cause bigger than yourself.
