Father and daughter duo take the helm at Martin & Co Welwyn Garden City

Martin & Co Welwyn Garden City is entering an exciting new chapter as father-and-daughter team Nigel Underdown and Mikala Hatfield take ownership of the well-established branch. The pair take over from long-standing Franchise Owner Stephen Dooley, who has been at the helm since November 2011 and is now retiring after more than a decade of dedicated service to the local property market.

With a combined 45 years of experience in estate agency and property management, Nigel and Mikala bring a unique blend of expertise, passion, and family values to the business.

“We’ve both shared a lifelong passion for property and people, so when the opportunity arose to take over the Welwyn Garden City branch, it felt like the perfect fit,” said Mikala. “Having already worked together across several ventures, this was a natural next step, combining Nigel’s decades of experience in estate agency with my background in property management and lettings. We’re excited to bring a fresh yet experienced perspective to the local market.”

The duo’s family bond is at the heart of their business philosophy.

“Being family means we’re completely aligned in our values, trust, integrity, and commitment,” added Nigel. “We communicate openly, make decisions collaboratively, and always put our clients first. Our dynamic allows us to combine traditional principles with modern energy, which we think is the ideal balance for today’s market.”

Nigel has over 30 years of experience in estate agency and property management and is also a seasoned landlord with an extensive personal portfolio. Mikala brings over 15 years of property experience, with a strong background in client relations, compliance, and operations. She has also successfully run several businesses, including Farm Parties, founded in memory of her son who sadly passed away from SUDC in 2024.

As they take the reins, the pair are focused on continuity and community, building upon the strong foundations laid by Stephen Dooley.

“Stephen built a highly reputable business with long-standing client relationships, something we’re proud to inherit,” said Mikala. “Our goal is to continue that legacy by modernising where needed while maintaining the personal service and professionalism that clients have come to expect.”
Under their leadership, clients can expect an even stronger emphasis on transparency, communication, and education. Planned initiatives include regular landlord updates, educational events, and compliance support around upcoming legislation such as the Renters Reform Bill. The team also aims to strengthen the sales department, offering a complete end-to-end service for buyers and sellers.

Welwyn Garden City’s thriving property market offers exciting opportunities for growth, from a strong rental sector driven by young professionals and families relocating from London, to a buoyant sales market appealing to those seeking both accessibility and lifestyle.

“Our vision is to be the most trusted and forward-thinking property agency in the area, one that delivers exceptional service, builds lasting relationships, and remains adaptable to an ever-changing market,” said Nigel. “We want our clients to feel supported, informed, and confident every step of the way.”
Toby Philips, Group Managing Director of Martin & Co, welcomed the new ownership, adding:

“We’re delighted to see Nigel and Mikala take the reins at Martin & Co Welwyn Garden City. Their combined experience, shared values, and genuine passion for people make them the perfect fit to lead this successful branch into its next chapter. Their family partnership embodies the spirit of our network – local expertise, trusted relationships, and a commitment to exceptional service.”
To celebrate the new chapter, Nigel and Mikala will be hosting a Landlord Event on 4th November at Mill Green Golf Club, covering the upcoming Renters Reform Bill and what it means for local landlords.
